Who might be able to join this trial:
- You are between 8 and 21 years old
- You came to the CHNOLA emergency room or another hospital with a sickle cell pain crisis that is serious enough to need a hospital stay for pain treatment
- You do not have any known thinking or brain-related difficulties
- A parent or guardian has given permission for you to take part, and if old enough, you have also agreed to join
Who may not be able to join:
- You are 7 years old or younger
- When admitted to the hospital, you are found to have a serious sickle cell complication beyond a standard pain crisis, such as acute chest syndrome, a problem with the spleen, pain after surgery, or a stroke
- You are not able to use virtual reality (VR) equipment or answer questions due to developmental or thinking difficulties
- A parent or guardian has not given permission, or you have refused to take part yourself
- You have already taken part in this study before
- The study team is not able to start the study activities within the first 24 hours of your hospital stay
