Who might be able to join this trial:
Case group (people with breast cancer):
- People who are biologically female
- People who have gone through natural menopause (periods stopped on their own, not due to surgical removal of both ovaries) and have had no periods for at least 1 year
- People who have used hormone replacement therapy (HRT) for no more than 3 years total, and have not used it in the last 6 months
- People who have been diagnosed with stage I, II, or III breast cancer
- People whose breast cancer is hormone receptor positive and HER2 negative (ER+/PR+/HER2-)
- People who are approximately 1 year past their breast cancer diagnosis and have received aromatase inhibitor therapy
- People who are approximately 5 or 10 years past their breast cancer diagnosis and have received aromatase inhibitor therapy for at least 2 years
- People who have already undergone surgery and/or radiation therapy for their breast cancer
Control group (people without breast cancer):
- People who are biologically female
- People who have gone through natural menopause (periods stopped on their own, not due to surgical removal of both ovaries) and have had no periods for at least 1 year
- People who have used hormone replacement therapy (HRT) for no more than 3 years total, and have not used it in the last 6 months
Who may not be able to join:
- People who have previously been treated with tamoxifen (a hormone therapy) before or around the time of menopause
- People who have significant signs or symptoms of heart disease, diabetes, or kidney disease — including chest pain or discomfort, shortness of breath at rest or with light activity, dizziness or fainting, swollen ankles, irregular heartbeat, leg pain when walking, unusual tiredness with everyday activities, or a known heart murmur
- People who have certain serious heart or circulatory conditions that make supervised maximum exercise testing unsafe, including previous heart attack, severe narrowing of major arteries, heart failure, blood clots in the lungs or legs, heart inflammation, uncontrolled irregular heartbeat, stroke, very high blood pressure (above 200/100 mmHg), or a cancer diagnosis other than skin cancer (confirm with trial site)
- People who are unable to give informed consent or cannot communicate in English
- People who have mobility limitations that would prevent exercise testing, such as using a wheelchair, walker, or having a significant limp
- People who experience extreme claustrophobia
