Who might be able to join this trial:

  • You have been officially diagnosed with a specific type of facial nerve pain called classical trigeminal neuralgia (TN), based on recognised international medical guidelines.
  • Your pain comes in sudden sharp attacks, or you have those attacks along with ongoing continuous pain.
  • Your facial pain affects the cheek and/or jaw area (the middle and/or lower parts of the face), and there is no known underlying cause for it.
  • A brain MRI scan has not shown any structural problem (such as a tumour or other abnormality) causing your facial pain.
  • Your pain has continued at a level of 5 or higher out of 10 for more than three months, even after trying one or more medications at the correct doses.

Who may not be able to join:

  • Your condition has been diagnosed as a different type of trigeminal nerve pain (painful trigeminal neuropathy) rather than classical trigeminal neuralgia.
  • Your facial pain is mainly in the forehead or eye area (the upper part of the face).
  • You have trigeminal neuralgia alongside other types of unusual or atypical facial pain.
  • Your trigeminal neuralgia is caused by an identifiable physical reason, such as a blood vessel pressing on the nerve, a brain tumour, or a nerve condition affecting the brain's protective covering.
  • You have previously had a procedure using radiofrequency (heat-based) treatment on the nerve in question.
  • You do not wish to take part in the study.
