Who might be able to join this trial:

Case group (people with breast cancer):

  • People who are biologically female
  • People who have gone through natural menopause (periods stopped on their own, without surgical removal of the ovaries) for at least 1 year
  • People who have used hormone replacement therapy (HRT) for no more than 3 years total, and have not used it in the last 6 months (if applicable)
  • People who have been diagnosed with stage I, II, or III breast cancer
  • People whose breast cancer is driven by hormones (hormone receptor positive)
  • People whose breast cancer tests negative for HER2 (a specific protein), and positive for both ER and PR hormone receptors
  • People who are confirmed to begin a type of hormone-blocking treatment called an aromatase inhibitor for the first time within the next 2–3 months
  • People who have already received surgery and/or radiation treatment for their breast cancer

Control group (people without breast cancer):

  • People who are biologically female
  • People who have gone through natural menopause (periods stopped on their own, without surgical removal of the ovaries) for at least 1 year
  • People who have used hormone replacement therapy (HRT) for no more than 3 years total, and have not used it in the last 6 months (if applicable)

Who may not be able to join:

  • People who have previously been treated with a hormone therapy called tamoxifen before or around the time of menopause
  • People who have major signs or symptoms of heart disease, diabetes, or kidney disease — including chest pain or discomfort, unexplained shortness of breath, dizziness or fainting, swollen ankles, irregular heartbeat, leg pain when walking, a known heart murmur, or unusual tiredness with everyday activities
  • People with serious heart or circulation conditions that medical guidelines identify as reasons to avoid maximum-effort exercise testing — such as a recent heart attack, severe heart valve narrowing, heart failure, blood clots in the lungs or legs, heart inflammation, uncontrolled abnormal heart rhythms, severe electrical conduction problems in the heart, recent stroke or mini-stroke, very high blood pressure (above 200/100 mmHg), or a cancer diagnosis other than skin cancer
  • People who are unable to give informed consent or communicate in English
  • People who have mobility limitations that would affect exercise testing, such as using a wheelchair, walker, or having a limp that affects walking
  • People with severe claustrophobia
