Who might be able to join this trial:
- You are between 18 and 65 years old
- You are scheduled to have brain surgery on the upper part of the brain (called supratentorial surgery)
- Your overall health has been rated as acceptable for surgery by your anesthesia team (ASA status I, II, or III — confirm with trial site if unsure what this means)
- Your body weight falls within a healthy to moderately obese range (BMI between 18.5 and 45)
- You are able to read and understand English
Who may not be able to join:
- You are unable or unwilling to sign a consent form
- You are expected to be discharged from the hospital within 24 hours after surgery
- You need emergency surgery
- You currently use the pain medication methadone, or you are allergic to it
- You have ongoing chronic pain that requires you to take opioid pain medications every day, at a level the FDA considers "opioid tolerant," or you use long-acting opioids such as fentanyl patches or extended-release oxycodone
- You have a current or past substance use disorder, or you are being treated with medications for opioid use disorder such as methadone, buprenorphine (any form), or naltrexone
- You have significant kidney problems before surgery (confirm with trial site for specific lab values)
- You are pregnant
- You have serious liver disease, such as cirrhosis or liver failure
- A pre-surgery heart test (ECG) shows a specific abnormality in your heart's electrical activity (QTc greater than 450 — confirm with trial site if unsure)
- You require oxygen at home due to a lung condition
- You are unable to speak or read English
