Who might be able to join this trial:
- Adults aged 18 or older who have been diagnosed with end-stage kidney failure and have been receiving dialysis at least once a week for the past two weeks.
- Women who are able to become pregnant but are using a form of contraception, have decided not to have more children, or have had a sterilisation procedure — as well as women who are not able to become pregnant.
- People whose kidneys still produce some urine — specifically, at least 200 ml of urine collected over a full 24-hour period (including overnight), measured on a day without dialysis.
- People who are able and willing to take part for the full length of the study, which is up to 266 days from the time of joining.
- People who can understand what the study involves, are able to sign a consent form voluntarily, and are willing to follow the study requirements.
Who may not be able to join:
- Women who are able to become pregnant and are not using any form of contraception and have not had a sterilisation procedure.
- Women who are currently pregnant or breastfeeding.
- People who plan to become pregnant, or whose partner plans to become pregnant, within 12 months of joining the study.
- People whose blood potassium levels have measured at 6 mmol/L or higher on their last two recorded tests.
- People whose 24-hour urine collection at the start of the study shows less than 200 ml of urine produced.
- People currently receiving peritoneal dialysis (a type of dialysis done through the abdomen).
- People who have already received a kidney transplant, or who have a live kidney transplant planned within 259 days of joining the study.
- People who have been gaining more than 4 kg in weight between dialysis sessions over the past two weeks.
- People with a known allergy to quillaja bark or similar tree bark.
- People who are already taking part in another clinical trial (COVID-19 vaccine or COVID-19 drug trials are exceptions to this rule).
- People taking immune-suppressing medications following a kidney transplant.
- During follow-up visits: people who become pregnant after joining the trial, or who experience a severe reaction to the trial treatment.
