Who might be able to join this trial:
- People who are over 18 years old
- People who have had head and neck cancer confirmed by a biopsy
- People who have no signs of cancer at the time of joining the study, between 12 and 60 months after finishing cancer treatment
- People who have had lymphedema (swelling caused by a build-up of lymph fluid) for at least 6 months
- People who have swelling in at least 2 areas on the outside of the body (such as the face, neck, or nearby areas)
- People who have at least 1 area of swelling rated as moderate severity using a specific assessment tool called the HN-LEF Assessment Criteria
- People whose lymphedema has not fully responded to previous treatment, has gotten worse after treatment, has come back due to difficulty managing it at home, or where treatment could not be completed due to practical barriers
- People who are able to understand English well enough to fill in questionnaires and to give informed consent to participate
Who may not be able to join:
- Women of childbearing age or who could become pregnant
- People who currently have an acute skin infection (cellulitis) in the head and neck area
- People who have chronic inflammatory diseases
- People who have a blood clot in a vein (venous thrombosis)
- People who have a narrowing of the carotid artery (a major blood vessel in the neck)
- People who need to regularly take water tablets (diuretics) or steroid medications (corticosteroids)
- People who are currently receiving active lymphedema therapy or physical therapy, including treatments such as hyperbaric oxygen therapy or pentoxifylline (trental)
- People who have a skin rash, ulcer, or open wound in the area where treatment would be given
- People who have allergic skin conditions or other widespread skin diseases
