Who might be able to join this trial:
- You were born female
- You are living with HIV and have been on a stable HIV treatment regimen for at least 180 days (about 6 months)
- You are between 45 and 75 years old
- You have at least one of the following: type 2 diabetes, reduced kidney filtering function (confirm with trial site), or a certain level of protein detected in your urine (confirm with trial site)
- A special heart imaging scan done during screening shows that blood flow to your heart is reduced below a certain level (confirm with trial site)
Who may not be able to join:
- You are currently taking a type of diabetes medication called an SGLT2 inhibitor (such as empagliflozin or dapagliflozin)
- You have a known allergy to SGLT2 inhibitor medications
- You have type 1 diabetes, or a form of diabetes that has caused a dangerous condition called ketoacidosis
- You have a history of a kidney condition called polycystic kidney disease
- You have a history of a heart attack, stroke, or a procedure to open blocked heart arteries
- You have chest pain related to your heart (either stable or unstable)
- You have a history of heart failure
- Your blood sugar control (measured by a test called HbA1c) is too high at the time of screening
- Your blood pressure is very high at the time of screening (confirm with trial site)
- Your kidney filtering function is below a certain level (confirm with trial site)
- You are currently on dialysis (hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis)
- Your immune cell count (CD4) is below 400 (confirm with trial site)
- You are currently taking steroid tablets, injections, or infusions, or immune-suppressing medications (not including creams, certain anti-inflammatory tablets, or UV therapy)
- You are pregnant or breastfeeding
- You have a known allergy to the substances used in the heart imaging scan (confirm with trial site)
- You are already taking part in another research study that would conflict with this one
- You have had frequent urinary tract infections (2 or more in 6 months, or 3 or more in a year) or frequent vaginal yeast infections (2 or more in 6 months, or 3 or more in a year)
