  • People who have Type 1 diabetes, or who are currently taking certain medications for Type 2 diabetes (confirm with trial site for specific medications)
  • People who have had a heart attack or stroke in the past 6 months
  • People who have health conditions that prevent them from walking for exercise — for example, a lower limb amputation — or who report heart problems, frequent chest pains, fainting, or dizziness on a standard health screening questionnaire
  • People who have lost 5% or more of their body weight and kept it off in the last 3 months
  • People who have ever been diagnosed with or treated for an eating disorder such as anorexia nervosa or bulimia nervosa, or who report engaging in related harmful behaviours in the past 3 months
  • People who are currently pregnant, were pregnant in the past 6 months, or plan to become pregnant in the next 12 months
  • People who have untreated thyroid disease, or whose thyroid medication type or dose has changed in the past 6 months
  • People who have been hospitalised for depression or another psychiatric condition in the past 12 months
  • People with a history of a psychotic disorder or uncontrolled bipolar disorder
  • People who are currently taking part in another weight loss, nutrition, physical activity, or research program that could interfere with this trial
  • People currently taking prescription medications known to affect appetite or weight — such as oral steroids or weight loss medications — unless they have been on a stable dose of an SSRI antidepressant for at least 3 months
  • People who have previously had weight loss surgery, or who are planning to have weight loss surgery in the next year
  • People who are not able to speak and read English
  • People who do not live in the United States
  • People who do not have a mobile phone with a data plan, or who are not willing to be contacted by the study team via text message
  • People who do not have access to the internet
  • People who are not willing to be randomly assigned to either of the two study groups
