Who might be able to join this trial:
- People who have been on a breathing machine (mechanical ventilator) for at least 48 hours
- People who are on a ventilator setting that allows them to take some breaths on their own, with the machine providing support, and where the breath size and pressure settings fall within specific ranges
- People whose doctor has decided they are ready to try a "spontaneous breathing trial" — a test to see if they can breathe without the ventilator — after meeting a set of medical readiness checks, including stable oxygen levels, heart rate, blood pressure, breathing rate, and little or no need for blood pressure-supporting medications
- People (or their family member, if the person cannot respond) who have been informed about the study and have not objected to taking part
- People who are covered by, or eligible for, a social security scheme (French healthcare coverage)
- People with a body mass index (BMI) above 30 kg/m² — meaning they are classified as obese — for those being enrolled in the specific obesity group of the trial
Who may not be able to join:
- People under 18 years of age
- Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding
- People for whom coming off the ventilator is not considered possible, such as those with pre-existing muscle or nerve disorders, or injuries to the upper spinal cord in the neck area
- People for whom repeatedly assessing feelings of breathlessness would likely be difficult, such as those with a known history of cognitive or psychiatric conditions, those currently experiencing delirium, or those with a level of sedation or agitation outside a specific range
- People who are under a legal protection order, such as guardianship or curatorship
