Who might be able to join this trial:
- You are 18 years of age or older
- You are able to give written consent to take part in the study
- You have enough thinking and language ability to understand and take part in the study tasks and assessments
- You have been diagnosed with major depression, bipolar disorder, or mild cognitive impairment (MCI) — OR you are a healthy volunteer with no history of any psychiatric or cognitive condition
- Your condition is currently stable and you are not going through an acute crisis needing urgent care
- (For major depression group): You have been diagnosed with major depression through a clinical assessment, and have no history of bipolar disorder or psychosis
- (For bipolar disorder group): You have been diagnosed with bipolar disorder type I or II through a clinical assessment
- (For MCI group): You have an existing diagnosis of mild cognitive impairment, supported by memory/thinking tests and/or brain scans, and no history of major psychiatric conditions such as depression, bipolar disorder, or schizophrenia
Who may not be able to join:
- You have had an active psychotic disorder or substance misuse problem (other than nicotine) in the past year
- You have a serious or unstable physical health condition that could affect your ability to take part or affect the results
- You have an active neurological condition such as epilepsy, a brain injury, or a stroke that could affect your thinking or brain scan results
- You are unable to complete the study tasks, including thinking tests and brain activity measurements
- You are currently pregnant
- (For healthy volunteers): You have any past or current psychiatric or cognitive condition
- (For major depression group): You have a diagnosis of bipolar disorder or schizophrenia, or have had brain stimulation therapy in the past 3 months
- (For bipolar disorder group): You have a diagnosis of schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder
- (For MCI group): You have been diagnosed with dementia, or your thinking difficulties are severe enough to prevent you from completing the study tasks
