Who might be able to join this trial:
- You are 18 years of age or older at the time of signing consent
- You are able to sign a consent form and authorize use of your health information
- You are generally able to carry out daily activities, with little to no limitation from your condition (confirm with trial site for exact fitness level required)
- Your cancer is located in the oropharynx (the back part of the throat, including the tonsils, base of the tongue, soft palate, or back/side walls of the throat)
- Your cancer has been confirmed as squamous cell carcinoma (a specific type of cancer) by a tissue sample
- A specific marker of HPV-related cancer (called ctHPVDNA) has been detected in your blood before treatment
- Your tumor can likely be fully removed by surgery with clear (cancer-free) edges
- Both smokers and non-smokers are welcome to apply
- Your tumor is at an early to moderate stage (T1 or T2, or certain T3 tumors that are movable and do not affect the voice box)
- Your lymph nodes in the neck are at stage N0, N1, or N2
- If your neck lymph nodes are affected, they are movable on physical examination
- Your tumor has tested positive for HPV (the human papillomavirus)
- If your cancer's original location is unclear, you may still be included under certain conditions (confirm with trial site)
Who may not be able to join:
- You have a serious medical condition that would make it unsafe for you to have general anesthesia for surgery
- You have previously had radiation treatment to the head or neck, or had a head or neck cancer, within the last 3 years
- Your cancer has spread to other parts of the body (distant metastasis)
- You have more than one HPV-positive throat cancer at the same time
- You have had another type of invasive cancer within the last 3 years — exceptions may apply for certain skin cancers, thyroid cancer, or if you are considered fully cured (confirm with trial site)
- You are currently pregnant or breastfeeding
- If you are a woman who could potentially become pregnant, you must have a negative pregnancy test on the day of surgery — unless you have had your uterus or both ovaries removed, or have not had a menstrual period naturally for at least 12 months in a row
