Who might be able to join this trial:
For patients with a lung condition:
- You have been diagnosed with a condition called interstitial lung disease (ILD), confirmed using standard medical guidelines
- You are between 18 and 75 years old
- You have had a lung infection in the past month
- You are willing to take part in the study voluntarily
For healthy volunteers:
- You do not have any diagnosed long-term (chronic) health conditions
- You are a healthy adult between the ages of 45 and 80

For patients with a lung condition:
- You have had a sudden worsening of your lung condition or a breathing infection in the last four weeks
- You have a lung condition that causes blocked or narrowed airways (such as asthma or COPD)
- You have a condition affecting your nervous system, muscles, bones, or general physical ability
- You have taken part in a structured exercise programme within the last three months
- You have memory or thinking difficulties that would make it hard to follow exercise test instructions
- You have a medical reason why exercise testing would not be safe for you (confirm with trial site)
- You have cancer, kidney disease, or liver disease
- You have a heart valve problem (aortic stenosis), an irregular heartbeat, or a bulge in a major blood vessel (aortic aneurysm)
- You have a serious heart or circulation condition, such as uncontrolled high blood pressure, uncontrolled diabetes, heart failure, or an irregular heartbeat
For healthy volunteers:
- You score below 24 on a standard memory and thinking assessment test
- You have a significant smoking history (roughly 10 or more pack-years — confirm with trial site)
- You have previously had COVID-19
- Your body mass index (a measure of weight relative to height) is over 30
