Who might be able to join this trial:
- Adults aged 18 years or older who have a suspected or confirmed diagnosis of a condition called NEL and have ongoing fluid build-up around the lungs (pleural effusion).
- People who are already scheduled to have that fluid drained as part of their usual medical care.
- People who can understand spoken or written information in English and can give their consent to participate in English.
Who may not be able to join:
- People who have previously had a procedure called pleurodesis, or any other procedure that may have affected how the space around their lungs works.
- People who currently have an active infection or another serious medical condition that could interfere with the study.
- People who have pain coming from multiple causes and whose pain level is already rated at 5 or higher out of 10 on a standard pain scale.
- People who need a type of long-term drain called an indwelling pleural catheter (IPC).
- People who have known medical reasons why draining fluid from around the lungs, or allowing air into that space, would not be safe for them.
- People who are unable to give consent in English, cannot adequately understand spoken or written information in English, or have special communication needs.
