Who might be able to join this trial:
- People who are between 18 and 65 years old
- People who smoke more than 2 cigarettes per day on a daily basis
- People who have a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 30 or higher, which is the medical threshold for obesity
- People who do not currently want to quit smoking
Who may not be able to join:
- People who have ever been diagnosed with schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder, or bipolar disorder
- People who have been admitted to a hospital for psychiatric reasons in the past year
- People who have had thoughts of suicide in the past month, any suicide attempt in the past year, or who show signs of severe depression based on screening questionnaires
- People whose depression or anxiety symptoms have been getting worse over the past 3 months
- People with a personal or family history of a specific type of thyroid cancer (medullary thyroid carcinoma) or a hormonal condition called multiple endocrine neoplasia syndrome
- People with a personal history of pancreas inflammation (pancreatitis), type 1 or type 2 diabetes, a diabetes-related eye condition, or a stomach-emptying disorder
- People currently using any nicotine replacement products (such as patches or gum) or any prescription medication to help with quitting smoking
- People who have previously had weight-loss (bariatric) surgery
- People who have used a GLP-1 medication (a type of drug used for weight loss or blood sugar control) or any other weight-lowering or blood sugar-lowering medication in the past 6 months — this includes medications such as metformin, insulin, and several others (confirm with trial site for the full list)
- People whose blood test results fall outside acceptable ranges, including measures related to kidney function, liver function, blood fats, blood sugar, or other laboratory values that the study doctor considers significantly abnormal
- People with a significant bowel or digestive condition, such as inflammatory bowel disease, certain bowel cancers, severe stomach-emptying problems, bowel obstructions, or a history of bowel surgery (some minor surgeries such as appendix removal may be acceptable — confirm with trial site)
- People with any other health condition or circumstance that the study investigators believe would make participation unsafe or interfere with the study
- People with a known or suspected allergy to semaglutide (the study drug) or any related medications
