Who might be able to join this trial:

  • You or your child has been officially diagnosed with Sickle Cell Disease (SCD)
  • The child is between 6 and 18 years old
  • The child reports pain that significantly interferes with daily life, based on scores above a set threshold on a standard pain questionnaire (parents answer on behalf of children aged 6–7; children aged 8 and older answer for themselves)
  • The child and/or family speaks enough Dutch or English to complete the study questionnaires

Who may not be able to join:

  • The child has already had a successful stem cell transplant
  • The young person is currently pregnant
  • There are ongoing safety concerns in the home or environment (for example, current domestic violence) that could get in the way of taking part in psychological therapy
  • The child has a serious current medical or mental health condition — such as psychosis, substance dependence, severe self-harm, or immediate risk of suicide — that requires urgent treatment
  • The child is currently receiving psychological or trauma therapy from another therapist at the same time as this trial
  • The child is estimated to have an IQ below 80, based on medical records or information from school or educational services (confirm with trial site)
