Who might be able to join this trial:

  • You are right-handed and have completed at least nine years of basic schooling.
  • You have been diagnosed with bipolar depression, as defined by the DSM-5 (a standard medical guide used to diagnose mental health conditions).
  • You score 18 points or higher on a standard depression rating scale called the HAMD-17, indicating a certain level of depression symptoms.
  • You score 8 points or lower on a standard mania rating scale called the YMRS, indicating that mania symptoms are low or absent.
  • You have either never taken psychiatric medication, or you are willing and able to stop taking psychiatric medication for at least 2 weeks before the trial begins.
  • You (or your legal guardian) are willing to participate in the treatment, have been fully informed about how it works, and are willing to sign a consent form.

Who may not be able to join:

  • You have metal or electronic devices inside your body, such as a pacemaker, cochlear implant, stent, or any metal fragments in your head or body, as these can be unsafe with MRI scans or the study treatment.
  • You have previously had or are currently receiving brain stimulation treatments such as electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), or similar therapies.
  • You are pregnant, breastfeeding, or are a woman of childbearing age with a positive pregnancy test.
  • You have another major mental health condition that your doctor considers more significant than your bipolar disorder diagnosis.
  • You have additional mental health diagnoses such as obsessive-compulsive disorder, personality disorders, anxiety disorders, intellectual disability, or substance use/dependence.
  • You have active thoughts of suicide, as measured by a specific rating scale used in the study.
  • You are considered at serious risk of harming yourself or others.
  • You have a history of a serious physical illness or medical condition that may affect the brain or nervous system.
  • You have a history of or are at risk for neurological problems or seizures, including previous head injuries, abnormal brain scans or EEG results, or a family history of epilepsy.
