Who might be able to join this trial:
- You are at least 18 years old
- You have been diagnosed with sickle cell disease (any type or form)
- Your blood test shows a ferritin (iron) level of 400 ng/mL or higher — OR — your ferritin level is below 400 ng/mL but you have heart-related symptoms such as shortness of breath or swelling in your legs (confirm with trial site)
- You are willing to have regular heart tests, including echocardiograms, ECGs, and cardiac MRI scans
- You are generally able to carry out daily activities with no more than mild limitations (confirm with trial site)
- You are able to read, understand, and sign a consent form
- Your doctor has agreed that it is appropriate for you to take part
Who may not be able to join:
- You are unable to attend the required follow-up appointments
- You have been diagnosed with heart failure
- You have unstable angina (chest pain that is not controlled)
- You have an irregular heartbeat that is not under control
- You have recently had a blood clot in your lungs (acute pulmonary embolism)
- You currently have an active infection or another serious health condition that the trial doctors feel would prevent safe participation
- You have had a bad reaction to chelation therapy (treatment to remove excess iron) in the past, or have a medical reason not to use it
- You have severe kidney or liver problems
- You are currently pregnant or breastfeeding
