Who might be able to join this trial:
For children/teens who have a parent with bipolar disorder ("high-risk offspring"):
- You are between 6 and 18 years old (boys and girls are both eligible)
- Both you and your parent(s) are willing and able to sign a consent form
- At least one of your parents has been diagnosed with bipolar disorder by two or more senior psychiatrists
For young people with atypical depression:
- You are between 6 and 18 years old (boys and girls are both eligible)
- Both you and your parent(s) are willing and able to sign a consent form
- You have been diagnosed with atypical depression by two or more senior psychiatrists, following standard diagnostic guidelines (DSM-5)
- There are no restrictions on what stage of the illness you are at or what treatment you are currently receiving
For healthy volunteers:
- You are a healthy individual whose age and gender match those of the high-risk offspring group
- You have no family history of psychiatric illness
Who may not be able to join:
For children/teens who have a parent with bipolar disorder:
- You scored above 12 on a mood questionnaire called the HCL-32 (confirm with trial site)
- You have been diagnosed with bipolar disorder or show signs of certain other psychiatric conditions based on a structured interview (confirm with trial site)
- You have a serious physical illness, such as a kidney, liver, or nervous system disease
For young people with atypical depression:
- You scored above 12 on a mood questionnaire called the HCL-32 (confirm with trial site)
- You have been diagnosed with bipolar disorder or show signs of certain other psychiatric conditions based on a structured interview (confirm with trial site)
- You have a serious physical illness, such as a kidney, liver, or nervous system disease
- You have a substance misuse problem alongside your depression
- You have received a type of treatment called MECT (electroconvulsive-style therapy) in the past six months (confirm with trial site)
For healthy volunteers:
- You have a family history of any psychiatric illness
- You have a serious physical illness, such as a kidney, liver, or nervous system disease
