Who might be able to join this trial:
- Adults aged 18 or older
- People classified as having a low-to-moderate anaesthetic risk (a rating system doctors use called ASA Class I, II, or III)
- People who are booked for a planned (non-emergency) brain surgery
- People who have given their own written consent, or whose legal representative has done so on their behalf
Who may not be able to join:
- People whose level of consciousness or awareness is reduced before surgery (as measured by a standard medical scale called the Glasgow Coma Scale, with a score below 15)
- People who already have a headache rated 4 or higher out of 10 on a pain scale before surgery
- People for whom doctors expect difficulties with waking from sedation or breathing after surgery, requiring a breathing machine
- People who are unable to use or understand a numbered pain rating scale
- People who have known allergies or medical reasons to avoid certain types of local anaesthetics, opioid pain medicines, or anti-inflammatory medicines (NSAIDs)
- People who have been taking opioid pain medicines or steroid medicines (corticosteroids) for more than 2 weeks
- People with a history of drug misuse or substance abuse in the past 2 years
- People who drink more than 3 standard alcoholic drinks per day
- People with mental health or cognitive conditions that would affect the ability to be assessed around the time of surgery
- People for whom nerve block injections are not suitable — for example, due to infection or a tumour at the injection site, a confirmed nerve condition caused by diabetes (diabetic peripheral neuropathy), or an inability to cooperate with the procedure
- People with severe liver disease (a medical classification called Child-Pugh Class C), severe kidney disease requiring dialysis before surgery, or severe heart failure (confirm with trial site for the specific activity tolerance measure used)
- People who are pregnant or breastfeeding
- People who have previously had brain surgery, or who have ongoing pain conditions such as migraines or trigeminal neuralgia
- People whose surgical incision extends beyond the area that can be covered by scalp nerve block injections
- People who are already participating in another clinical trial
