Who might be able to join this trial:
- You are 18 years old or older
- You have been diagnosed with Graves' disease, confirmed through symptoms (such as an enlarged thyroid or eye problems) and blood tests showing abnormal thyroid hormone levels and/or a positive antibody test
- You have a medical reason to have your entire thyroid removed, such as: hyperthyroidism returning or not improving after taking antithyroid medications; having a bad reaction or intolerance to antithyroid medications; preferring surgery over other treatments; having a large thyroid causing discomfort or difficulty breathing/swallowing; having a suspicious thyroid nodule found before surgery; or having moderate to severe eye problems related to Graves' disease where radioactive iodine treatment is not recommended
- You are already scheduled to have a complete (total) thyroidectomy — meaning full removal of the thyroid gland
- You are willing and able to sign a consent form agreeing to take part
- You are able to understand what the study involves and what will be required of you
Who may not be able to join:
- You are under 18 years of age
- You have had thyroid surgery in the past
- You have previously had radiation treatment to your neck
- You have been diagnosed with thyroid cancer before the surgery, confirmed by a biopsy (confirm with trial site)
- You are not able to give informed consent, for example due to a cognitive or mental health condition
- Your main reason for having thyroid surgery is something other than Graves' disease, such as a large non-cancerous multinodular goiter
- You are having only part of your thyroid removed, rather than the whole gland
