Who might be able to join this trial:
- Adults over 18 years old who are generally healthy but overweight or obese, with a BMI between 27 and 45
- Women aged 40 or under (15 places available for this group)
- Men aged 40 or under (15 places available for this group)
- Women aged 55–65 who have been through menopause (no menstrual period for 12 months) and are not taking Hormone Replacement Therapy, or HRT (15 places available for this group)
- Men aged 55–65 (15 places available for this group)
- Women aged 55–65 who have been through menopause and have been taking oestrogen-based HRT continuously for at least 24 months (15 places available for this group)
Who may not be able to join:
- People currently taking certain medications, including weight loss drugs (such as GLP-1 agonists like Ozempic/Semaglutide), beta-blockers, antihistamines, antipsychotics, benzodiazepines, barbiturates, melatonin, Ritalin, modafinil, sleeping tablets, epilepsy medications, or diabetes medications such as metformin or insulin
- Women who are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or currently breastfeeding
- People with coeliac disease, gluten intolerance, or any food allergy
- People who have been diagnosed with Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes
- People with a diagnosed psychiatric disorder or any form of substance abuse
- People who follow a vegetarian or vegan diet
- People currently on a weight loss programme that affects their diet, physical activity, or lifestyle, or who have had gastric band or stomach reduction surgery
- People currently taking part in another research study
- People whose veins are not suitable for blood sample collection
- People who are not able to speak, read, and understand English fluently
- People who are not able to avoid alcohol completely for 6 weeks
- People who are not able to give fully informed consent
