Who might be able to join this trial:

• You have been diagnosed with sickle-cell anemia (specifically the type called HbSS)
• Your outer ear has a normal shape and your skin around the ear is healthy and unbroken (this is needed for placing a small device on the ear)
• You are currently in the hospital because of a pain crisis caused by sickle cell disease
• You have been hospitalized at least once before for a sickle cell pain crisis

Who may not be able to join:

• You have a history of seizures
• You have a psychiatric (mental health) condition that is not well controlled
• You have repeated episodes where your breathing stops or your heart rate drops very low, and these do not resolve on their own
• You have a heart muscle disease (called cardiomyopathy)
• You have been diagnosed with Acute Chest Syndrome (a serious sickle cell complication affecting the lungs)
• You have a heart or breathing-related birth defect that has not been surgically corrected
• Your condition is currently making you medically unstable (confirm with trial site)
• You are pregnant, breastfeeding, or refuse to take a pregnancy test
• You are a woman who could become pregnant and are not using an adequate form of birth control, or are not willing to use birth control for the duration of the study
• You have had surgery within the last 3 months
• You have had a stroke within the last 3 months
• You currently have a fever, or develop a fever at any point during your hospital stay
• Your regular medications for sickle cell disease or pain have not yet reached a stable, consistent dose
• You have been hospitalized 3 or more times for acute pain crises within the past year
