Who might be able to join this trial:
- People who are 18 years of age or older
- People who have not previously had head and neck cancer
- People who have not previously had radiation therapy
- People who are planned to have surgery to remove up to half of their tongue (a partial or hemi-glossectomy), with immediate reconstruction using a tissue graft or similar technique, with or without removal of lymph nodes in the neck
- People who are able to read and write well enough in English, French, Spanish, or Simplified Chinese to complete survey questionnaires for the study
Who may not be able to join:
- People whose cancer has already spread to distant parts of the body at the time of enrolment
- People who have previously been seen and treated by a speech and language therapist for difficulties swallowing or speaking, where those difficulties were not related to head and neck cancer
- People who have previously had radiation therapy to the head or neck area
- People whose surgery would involve removal of part of the jawbone, or removal of more than half of their tongue
