Who might be able to join this trial:

• You are between 18 and 55 years old
• You are right-handed
• You have normal vision, or your vision is fully corrected (for example, with glasses or contact lenses)
• You have been diagnosed with Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) according to standard criteria, and are either not taking medication or have been on a stable medication dose for at least the past month — OR you are a healthy person with no history of any mental health or neurological conditions

Who may not be able to join:

• You have been diagnosed with another serious mental health condition, such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, or a neurodevelopmental disorder
• You are currently considered to be at high risk of suicide
• You have intellectual difficulties or significant hearing problems
• You have received brain stimulation treatments (such as electroconvulsive therapy) or any form of psychotherapy in the past 6 months
• If you are in the active brain stimulation group specifically: you have any reason you cannot safely have an MRI scan, such as metal implants in your body, severe claustrophobia, or other conditions that make MRI scanning unsuitable for you (confirm with trial site)
