Who might be able to join this trial:

- People who are scheduled to have primary (first-time) surgery for cancer of the tongue, involving a partial tongue removal (types 1 to 3), with any method of closing or rebuilding the area
Who may not be able to join:
- People who have previously had radiation treatment to the mouth, head, or neck area
- People who have previously had surgery for cancer in the mouth
- People whose mouth cancer has come back after earlier treatment
- People whose surgery would need to include removal of part of the jaw bone
- People who require removal of most or all of the tongue
- People who are already dependent on a feeding tube before surgery
