Who might be able to join this trial:
Hemodialysis (HD) group:
- You have been receiving kidney dialysis (hemodialysis) for at least 12 months and are between 20 and 70 years old, and you are willing to sign a consent form.
Kidney Transplant (KTR) group:
- You received a kidney transplant at least 12 months ago, are between 20 and 70 years old, and are willing to sign a consent form — regardless of what anti-rejection medications you take, your history before the transplant, or whether your donor kidney came from a living or deceased person.
General Osteoporosis (GPO) group:
- You are a man or a woman who has gone through menopause, aged between 50 and 70, and have been diagnosed with low bone density (osteopenia) or osteoporosis, and you are willing to sign a consent form.
Who may not be able to join:
Hemodialysis group:
- You are currently taking bone-strengthening medications (other than calcium or vitamin D supplements).
- You are currently being treated for cancer, or have recently had cancer.
- You have severe liver scarring (cirrhosis).
- You have had a major broken bone recently.
- You have received an organ transplant other than a kidney.
- You have certain other medical conditions that affect bone health unrelated to kidney disease, such as overactive parathyroid or thyroid glands, inherited bone disorders, certain inflammatory or hormonal conditions, or an eating disorder (confirm with trial site for full list).
- You are pregnant or breastfeeding.
Kidney Transplant group:
- All of the above reasons that exclude the dialysis group also apply, plus:
- You have returned to dialysis after your transplant.
- You have experienced an acute rejection of your transplanted kidney.
General Osteoporosis group:
- All of the same reasons that exclude the dialysis group also apply, plus:
- You have diabetes.
- You have been taking steroid medication (such as Prednisone at 7.5 mg or more per day, or a similar drug) for at least 3 months.
