Who might be able to join this trial:
- People who have been diagnosed with Non-Small-Cell Lung Cancer (NSCLC) confirmed by a tissue or cell sample, and whose cancer is at stage IIIA or IIIB (based on the current international staging system)
- People who have not received any previous treatment for their lung cancer
- People whose cancer has not spread to distant parts of the body
- People who are generally well enough to carry out daily activities with little or no limitation (as measured by a standard health scoring tool called ECOG, rated 0 or 1)
- People whose blood counts and organ function (such as liver and kidneys) are within acceptable levels
- People whose lungs are functioning adequately
- People aged 18 years or older
- People who have read and signed a written consent form agreeing to take part in the study, in line with national and international guidelines
- Women who are able to become pregnant, and their partners, where both agree to use a highly effective form of contraception — and where oral contraception is used, it must be combined with an additional method
- Men whose partners are able to become pregnant, and their partners, where both agree to use a highly effective form of contraception
- Women who have not gone through menopause or had surgery to prevent pregnancy must have a negative blood pregnancy test within 8 days before starting the study treatment
- People who are able to follow the treatment plan reliably and attend all required follow-up appointments
Who may not be able to join:
- People whose cancer has a specific gene change or amplification in the EGFR gene, or an ALK gene fusion
- People with known changes in the STK-11 gene, MDM2 gene amplification, or ROS1 gene rearrangement
- People who have lost more than 10% of their body weight in the 3 months before the study
- People who have previously received cancer-treating drugs, chest radiation therapy, or surgery for lung cancer
- People who have had another type of cancer within the 3 years before joining the trial (other than NSCLC)
- People who have fluid build-up around the lungs or around the heart
- People who have a known allergy or sensitivity to the study drug, atezolizumab, or any of its ingredients
- People with a history of autoimmune disease (where the immune system attacks the body) or certain lung diseases
- People who test positive for HIV
- People with active hepatitis B or hepatitis C infection, or who test positive for the hepatitis C virus
- People with active tuberculosis
- People experiencing nerve-related symptoms (such as pain, numbness, or weakness) rated above a mild level on a standard medical scale
- People who have had a serious infection in the 4 weeks before joining the study
