Who might be able to join this trial:
- Adults between 18 and 60 years old
- People who have been diagnosed with a patent foramen ovale (PFO) — a small natural opening in the heart that did not close after birth — with a significant flow of blood passing through it in the wrong direction
- For the case group: People who have been diagnosed with migraines (with or without aura) according to an internationally recognised headache classification system
- For the control group: People who have no history of migraines
- People who are willing and able to sign a written consent form
- People who have completed at least a primary school level of education
Who may not be able to join:
- People who have previously had a procedure to close their PFO, or who have had any surgery related to migraine treatment
- People who have been diagnosed with other serious heart or brain conditions, or any mental health or psychological conditions
- People for whom the closure procedure or an MRI scan would not be safe — for example, due to serious infection, blood clotting problems, a pacemaker, certain surgical clips, metal objects in or around the eye, or non-removable metal dental work
- People who are unable to complete migraine symptom questionnaires or medical imaging examinations for any other reason
