Who might be able to join this trial:
- You are willing and able to sign a consent form agreeing to take part
- You are between 18 and 75 years old (any gender)
- You have been diagnosed with fatty liver disease within the last 6 months
- You have at least one of the following: you are overweight or obese (BMI of 23 or above); you have type 2 diabetes; or you have at least two signs of metabolic problems, such as a large waist size, high blood pressure, high triglycerides (a type of fat in the blood), low "good" cholesterol (HDL), blood sugar levels in the pre-diabetes range, signs of insulin resistance, or raised levels of a marker of inflammation in the blood (confirm with trial site)
- A special type of MRI scan has shown that at least 8% of your liver is made up of fat
Who may not be able to join:
- You have cirrhosis (severe scarring of the liver), confirmed by tests or biopsy
- You have another type of long-term liver disease, such as viral hepatitis, autoimmune hepatitis, alcoholic liver disease, or liver damage from medication
- Your fatty liver is caused by something else, such as a medication, nutritional treatment through a drip, or an underactive thyroid
- You have taken gut bacteria-altering supplements or probiotics, or have recently changed certain medications (such as liver, diabetes, or cholesterol drugs) within the last 4 weeks
- You have taken certain specific medications that can affect fatty liver disease within the last 12 weeks, unless you have been on a stable dose for at least 24 weeks (confirm with trial site)
- Your diabetes is poorly controlled, with an HbA1c (a measure of blood sugar over time) above 9%
- You have yellowing of the skin or eyes (jaundice) or reduced kidney function, based on blood test results
- You have previously had weight-loss (bariatric) surgery
- You have, or are suspected to have, cancer
- You have a serious ongoing health condition, such as certain inflammatory diseases, bile or pancreas problems, a current infection, severe heart, lung, or blood disease, a heart attack or stroke in the last 6 months, or a significant mental health condition
- You have HIV
- You have a known allergy to a medication called rifaximin
- You are unable to have an MRI scan — for example, because you have certain metal implants, experience severe claustrophobia, or your body size is larger than the scanner can accommodate
- You are pregnant, breastfeeding, or planning to become pregnant
- You have taken part in another medication trial within the last 3 months
- The trial doctors have another reason they feel makes it unsuitable for you to join (confirm with trial site)
