Who may not be able to join:

  • You have serious vision or hearing problems that could make it hard to complete thinking or memory tasks
  • You are unable to read and follow written instructions
  • You have a physical, neurological, intellectual, or mental health condition (other than ADHD or ASD) that could affect your thinking or movement
  • You currently take antidepressants, antipsychotics, or other medications that might affect how you perform on tasks (confirm with trial site)
  • You take medications that could interact with the substances used in the study, including anything that affects your vision, hearing, thinking, or movement — except stimulant medications (confirm with trial site)
  • You have had a head injury that caused you to lose consciousness, or you have had brain surgery
  • You have ever had a bad reaction to products containing caffeine, paraxanthine, L-theanine, or corn starch
  • You are unwilling or unable to avoid foods or drinks containing caffeine, L-theanine, or paraxanthine for 24 hours before each study visit
  • You have taken medications or drugs containing caffeine, or certain related compounds, in the past 3 months (confirm with trial site)
  • You have taken medications known to interact with a substance called paraxanthine in the past 3 months (confirm with trial site)
  • You have a current or past diagnosis of tics or uncontrolled movements
  • You have a history of headaches, drowsiness, anxiety, sleep problems, or nausea after consuming caffeine or caffeine-containing drinks
  • You currently or previously smoked, or have a history of alcohol or drug misuse
  • You are unable to have an MRI scan based on a standard safety screening (confirm with trial site)
  • You are unwilling or unable to avoid using electronic devices during study visits
  • You are unwilling or unable to follow written, on-screen, or verbal instructions from the research team
