Who might be able to join this trial:
- People who have been diagnosed with any type of multiple sclerosis (MS) by a neurologist, confirmed using a brain scan (MRI)
- Adults between 18 and 70 years of age
- People with a body mass index (BMI) of 24.0 or higher (this generally means a person is in the overweight or above range)
- People who have received at least one dose of the MS medication Ocrelizumab before joining the study
- People whose MS has not progressed to a level of severe disability (specifically, a score below 7.0 on a standard MS disability scale)
- People who are able to give their own informed consent to participate
- People who have an MRI scan available that confirms their MS diagnosis
For one part of the study (Aim 1), there are additional requirements:
- People who have been treated with a GLP-1 medication (a type of drug often used for weight or blood sugar management) within the last 3 years, or who are expected to start one within the next 3 months
- People who are willing to report how they are feeling each month, either remotely or in person
For another part of the study (Aim 2), there are additional requirements:
- People who are able to attend in-person appointments at the start and during follow-up
- People who have not used a GLP-1 medication in the past year
- People who are expected to start a GLP-1 medication within the next 6 months
- People who plan to continue using a GLP-1 medication for at least 72 weeks after joining the study
Who may not be able to join:
- People who have previously been treated with certain strong MS or immune-suppressing treatments, including Mavenclad, Lemtrada, Cyclophosphamide, stem cell transplant, or similar bone marrow-suppressing therapies
- People who are currently participating in another clinical trial
- People who do not speak a language for which a translator is available within the hospital system
- People whose MS diagnosis or treatment history is not clearly documented
- People who have had an MS relapse (a flare-up of symptoms) within the past 3 months
- People who have had a major surgical procedure within the past 6 months
- People who have used systemic steroid medications (steroids taken throughout the body, not just applied to the skin) within the past 3 months
- People who have not been on Ocrelizumab for more than 9 months
- People who are in very poor or end-of-life health
- People who are underweight or experiencing serious nutritional deficiencies
- People who are not able to give consent freely and voluntarily — for example, due to dementia, being incarcerated, or other reasons affecting decision-making capacity
- People who, in the judgment of the study team, would be unable to complete the study activities for any reason
