Who might be able to join this trial:
- People aged between 18 and 65 years
- People who are planning to have weight-loss (bariatric) surgery using keyhole (laparoscopic) techniques under general anaesthetic
- People with a general health rating assessed by an anaesthetist as falling within a standard low-to-moderate risk range (ASA Class I–III) (confirm with trial site)
- People with a Body Mass Index (BMI) between 30 and 55 kg/m²
- People who agree to take part voluntarily and sign a consent form
Who may not be able to join:
- People who have a history of smoking or have previously had chest surgery
- People who have been on an invasive breathing machine (mechanical ventilator) within the last 30 days
- People who are pregnant
- People who have an allergy to the electrode pads used in a type of breathing monitoring called EIT
- People with ongoing serious instability in blood pressure or circulation (refractory shock)
- People with severe heart or lung disease, such as severe COPD, serious heart failure (NYHA Class III or IV), a recent heart attack event, or a dangerous irregular heart rhythm
- People with severely high blood pressure in the lungs (confirm with trial site)
- People with raised pressure in the skull, a brain injury or tumour, or a condition affecting the nerves and muscles
- People whose surgery changes from keyhole to open abdominal surgery during the procedure
- People who are expected to be transferred to an intensive care unit after surgery
