Who might be able to join this trial:
- You are 18 years old or older
- You have been diagnosed with a known type of sickle cell disease (SS, SC, S-beta+, or S-beta0)
- You are currently admitted to an intensive care unit (ICU)
- You have been clinically diagnosed with a pain crisis (vaso-occlusive crisis) and/or a serious lung complication called acute chest syndrome
- You are receiving pain relief through a self-controlled morphine pump (called PCA)
- You (or a family member/representative if you are unable to) have given consent to take part in the study
- You are covered by a social protection or health insurance scheme
Who may not be able to join:
- You have already taken part in this study during a previous hospital stay
- You have received or are scheduled to receive a certain type of medical dye (iodinated contrast medium) within specific time windows around the study (confirm with trial site)
- You have a known allergy or sensitivity to iohexol (a type of medical dye), or have an overactive thyroid condition (thyrotoxicosis)
- You were already taking morphine, methadone, buprenorphine, or any similar medication in the week before being hospitalised
- You have a serious chronic liver condition, such as cirrhosis, that could affect how your body processes morphine
- You have any other medical condition that means morphine is not safe for you to use
- You are currently under a legal protection order (confirm with trial site)
- You are pregnant or breastfeeding
- You need kidney replacement therapy (such as dialysis) within 24 hours of joining the study
