  • Households where another person is already enrolled in the study — enrollment is limited to one person per household
  • People with medical conditions that make weight loss inadvisable or that would prevent them from completing the study, such as a current cancer diagnosis, a terminal illness, or dementia (confirm with trial site)
  • People whose medications that can affect weight have changed in the past 6 months
  • People who have had a self-reported eating disorder within the past 5 years
  • People who are unable to complete the full 17-week study, for example due to plans to move during that time
  • People who are unable or unwilling to provide informed consent
  • People who are not able to read English at approximately a 5th-grade level
  • People who are unwilling to be randomly assigned to a study group
  • People who are unable or unwilling to download the study app, wear the physical activity monitor, or use the study scale
