Who might be able to join this trial:
- People aged 3 years or older
- People who are about to receive a kidney transplant, or who received one within the past 2 weeks before the screening date
- People whose transplant surgeon has decided they should receive preventive antiviral medication against CMV and/or EBV
- People who do not currently have an active CMV or EBV infection in the blood (as measured by a virus detection test) at the time of screening
- People (or, for children, their parent or legal guardian) who are willing and able to give consent and follow the study procedures
Who may not be able to join:
- People with serious other health conditions that the transplant surgeon considers would make participation unsafe
- People who are pregnant (one of the study medications, valganciclovir, is likely to cause harm to an unborn baby)
- People who are known to be allergic to both valacyclovir and valganciclovir
