Who might be able to join this trial:
- Your sputum (mucus/phlegm) test came back positive for TB bacteria, confirmed by either a Gene Xpert test or a microscope test
- You have either never been treated for TB before, or you have taken TB medication for less than 2 weeks
- You are aged 12 years or older
- You have a stable home address that can be visited by the study team
- You are willing to take part in the study and agree to have a blood sample taken for an HIV test
- Your recent blood test results (taken within the last 14 days) show that your liver, kidneys, blood cells, and potassium levels are all within acceptable ranges (confirm with trial site for exact values)
- You have given your informed consent to participate in the study
Who may not be able to join:
- You are known or suspected to have a drug-resistant form of TB
- You are living with HIV
- Your health condition is so poor that starting treatment cannot be delayed
- You have a serious ongoing health condition such as heart failure, coronary heart disease, or irregular heartbeat
- You have a known or family history of bleeding or clotting problems
- Your kidneys are not working properly, based on a specific blood test result (confirm with trial site)
- You have a muscle condition called myositis, or a specific muscle-related blood marker is significantly elevated
- You are in a very critical or end-of-life health state
- You have TB that has spread to the brain (TB meningitis)
- You have diabetes
- You have high blood pressure
- You are currently taking TB medication
- You have any other long-term illness that requires you to take daily medication
- You have a psychiatric (mental health) illness
- You are pregnant or currently breastfeeding
- You currently smoke tobacco or use tobacco in any form
- You drink alcohol or have a problem with alcohol use
- You regularly consume energy drinks, tea, coffee, cocoa, kola nuts, grapefruit or grapefruit juice, bitter oranges, garlic supplements, St. John's Wort, or similar herbal supplements, or take medications such as theophylline — and would not be able to stop these for the duration of the study
- You are currently enrolled in another clinical treatment trial
