Who might be able to join this trial:
- Adults between 18 and 70 years old who have been diagnosed with Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (lupus/SLE) according to recognised medical guidelines, and who have had a kidney biopsy confirming a specific type of lupus-related kidney disease (called lupus nephritis, class III, IV, and/or V)
- People who have had active lupus kidney disease (either new or returning) within the past six months, shown by kidney biopsy results or abnormal findings in a urine test (such as blood cells or other abnormal material in the urine)
- People who are already receiving standard medical treatments for lupus kidney disease, such as mycophenolate, cyclophosphamide, belimumab, azathioprine, a calcineurin inhibitor, and/or B-cell depleting therapies
- People who have used or are currently using steroid medications (such as prednisone) for lupus kidney disease within the past six months
- People who are receiving standard treatments including antimalarial medication and blood pressure/kidney-protective medication, unless a medical reason prevents this
- People whose urine tests at the time of enrolment show a certain level of protein or a related marker (confirm with trial site for exact values)
- People who are able to give their own informed consent to participate
Who may not be able to join:
- People whose kidneys are functioning at a low level, specifically a kidney filtration rate below 25 ml/min/1.73m² (confirm with trial site)
- People who have had a sudden, significant decline in kidney function (a rise in a kidney-related blood marker called creatinine of more than 50% within the past 90 days)
- People who have Type 1 diabetes, who are underweight (BMI below 18.5), who have an active cancer, an active infection, or who experience frequent urinary tract infections
- Women who are pregnant, who wish to become pregnant and are not using contraception, or who are unable to use contraception
- People currently taking steroid doses higher than 1mg/kg/day of prednisone or its equivalent
- People who currently use or have previously used medications known as SGLT2 inhibitors or GLP-1 receptor agonists (a class of diabetes and weight-related medications)
