Who might be able to join this trial:
- People who have had a first-ever ischemic stroke (a stroke caused by a blockage), confirmed by a neurologist using CT or MRI brain scans
- People whose neurological assessment showed limitations in movement and balance/posture
- People with a confirmed diagnosis of multiple sclerosis, diagnosed by a neurologist using MRI imaging
Who may not be able to join:
- People who have had more than one stroke in the past
- People whose resting systolic blood pressure (the top number) is below 120 or above 160 mmHg
- People with orthostatic hypotension (a condition where blood pressure drops significantly when standing up)
- People with carotid artery stenosis (narrowing of the main arteries in the neck) (confirm with trial site)
- People with serious heart disease
- People with hemophilia (a condition where blood does not clot properly)
- People with a history of traumatic brain injury
- People with a seizure disorder (such as epilepsy)
- People with diabetes that is currently untreated
- People with abnormal brain wave test (EEG) results
- People with abnormal blood test results
- People currently using sedative medications
- People who do not take their medications regularly or as prescribed
- People with severe difficulty speaking or understanding language (based on a specific aphasia test score)
- People with severe vision or hearing loss
- People with severe problems feeling sensations (such as touch or pressure)
- People with severe physical problems affecting the bones, joints, or muscles
- People with other neurological conditions that affect movement
- People with alcoholism
- People who use recreational drugs
- People who have continued smoking after their stroke diagnosis
- People who are unable to walk at least 10 metres (with or without assistance) within 6 minutes
- People whose balance assessment score falls at or below a certain threshold (Berg Balance Scale score of 32 or lower)
- People whose independence assessment score falls at or below a certain threshold (Barthel Index score of 70 or lower)
- People currently taking part in an individual or group exercise programme outside of standard physiotherapy
