Who might be able to join this trial:
- People aged between 19 and 70 years old
- People who are eligible for VA (Veterans Affairs) healthcare
- People with moderate to severe PTSD, confirmed by a specific assessment tool (called the CAPS) that scores at least 25, taken within 7 days of being enrolled in the trial
- People who agree to have their CAPS assessment audio recorded
- People for whom a specific brain stimulation measurement (called Motor Threshold) can be successfully taken using the TMS device during the screening process
- Women who could become pregnant must be using an accepted form of birth control, such as contraceptives or abstinence
- People who are able to read, understand, and sign the consent form for the trial
Who may not be able to join:
- Women who are currently pregnant or breastfeeding
- People for whom an MRI scan is not safe or is not recommended (confirm with trial site)
- People currently taking the medication clozapine at any dose, or bupropion at more than 300mg per day
- People who have a cardiac pacemaker or an implantable defibrillator
- People who have any metal object in their head, such as a cochlear implant (dental work in the mouth does not apply)
- People with a significant brain or nervous system condition, such as a history of stroke, a brain tumour, or epilepsy
- People who have had a seizure within the past year
- People currently experiencing psychosis or mania
- People with significant suicidal thoughts
- People with unstable medical conditions
- People with a current alcohol or substance use disorder (not including nicotine) that would interfere with their ability to take part in the trial
- People who have received specific PTSD therapies called CPT or PE within the past 2 months
- People whose dose of certain antidepressants — Fluoxetine, Paroxetine, Sertraline, or Venlafaxine — has been changed in the past 2 months
- People who are colour blind
- People who are currently taking part in other research studies
- People who have an aneurysm clip
- People who have a metal foreign body in or around the eye (for example, metal shavings)
- People who have any other implanted device, such as a pump or infusion device
- People with shrapnel injuries or metal fragments in their body
