Who might be able to join this trial:
- Adults aged 18 or older
- People who have been diagnosed with squamous cell carcinoma (a type of cancer) in the head and neck area, confirmed by a tissue test
- People whose treatment plan involves treating both sides of the neck
- People whose treatment plan leaves at least one specific lymph node area (called level 1b) untreated, and where a particular salivary gland is located less than 1 centimetre from the treated area (confirm with trial site)
- People with a general health and activity level rated as reasonably functional (rated 0–2 on a standard medical scale)
- People whose treatment plan is intended to cure the cancer using radiotherapy, with or without chemotherapy
- People who are able to understand spoken and written information about the study and are willing to sign a consent form
- People who are able to lie flat on their back and wear a positioning device for up to one hour
Who may not be able to join:
- People who, in the opinion of the research team, have other serious illnesses throughout the body that make participation unsuitable
- People who are pregnant
- People who already have problems with their salivary glands before treatment begins, where the research team believes this would reduce the chance of benefit from the study
