Who might be able to join this trial:

  • People who were assessed before surgery as having a specific early-stage thyroid cancer (called T1N0M0 papillary thyroid carcinoma) and had their initial surgery at one of the participating medical centres between June 2018 and June 2025.
  • People whose papillary thyroid carcinoma was confirmed by laboratory examination of tissue removed during surgery.
  • People who had standard ultrasound and a special type of ultrasound using a contrast dye (to highlight blood flow) performed before surgery, with good-quality images available for review.
  • People whose surgery included removal of part or all of the thyroid gland, along with removal of nearby lymph nodes in the central neck area, so that laboratory results from those lymph nodes are available.
  • People whose full medical, pathology, and imaging records are available and retrievable from the hospital's records system.

Who may not be able to join:

  • People who received any cancer treatment directed at the thyroid before surgery — such as radiation, chemotherapy, targeted drug therapy, or ablation (tissue destruction) therapy.
  • People who also had another type of thyroid cancer alongside papillary thyroid carcinoma, such as medullary carcinoma or undifferentiated carcinoma.
  • People with a history of neck surgery or radiation to the neck that may have changed the normal structure of the lymph nodes in that area.
  • People with certain serious ongoing health conditions that could affect how the contrast ultrasound images appear, such as severe heart failure or advanced liver disease (confirm with trial site).
  • People with a known allergy to any ingredient in the ultrasound contrast agent used during imaging.
  • People whose medical or imaging records are incomplete in ways that would prevent a full analysis of their case.
