Who might be able to join this trial:
- You are an adult (18 years or older) who has been diagnosed with lung cancer that can be removed with surgery
- You have been referred by your lung cancer specialist team for a pre-surgery fitness programme called "Prehab"
- You meet at least one of the following referral conditions: you feel breathless during daily activities; your general health and activity level is somewhat reduced; you are aged 70 or older; you have been assessed as showing signs of frailty; your lung function test results are below a certain level; you are generally inactive even if your lung function results are acceptable
- You are scheduled for a lung surgery procedure, such as removal of part or all of a lung (confirm with trial site for specific surgery types)
- You are able to give your agreement (consent) verbally and in writing to take part in the fitness programme and the surgery
- You will be considered no matter what your baseline breathing muscle strength is
Who may not be able to join:
- You have a type of cancer other than operable lung cancer, such as cancer that has spread to other parts of the body, mesothelioma, sarcoma, tumours in the chest cavity, or a non-cancerous condition
- You do not wish to take part in the Prehab fitness programme or have not given your consent for surgery
- You have a high-risk heart condition that still needs tests or treatment, such as unstable chest pain or fainting episodes
- You have a serious ongoing health condition that could make the fitness programme unsafe for you
- You have a hernia in your abdomen or have had recent abdominal surgery
- You have a history of a collapsed lung (pneumothorax) or have large air pockets (bullae) visible on a scan
- You are unable to understand written or spoken English, unless a carer is able to translate for you
- You have a perforated (burst) eardrum
- You have pulmonary hypertension (high blood pressure in the lungs)
- Your heart failure symptoms have been getting worse during the breathing exercise part of the programme
- You have had or are likely to develop a painful condition affecting the cartilage where your ribs meet your breastbone (confirm with trial site)
- You have previously taken part in a similar study in a way that could affect the fairness of this trial's results
