Who might be able to join this trial:

• You are between 5 and 20 years old
• You have been diagnosed with sickle cell disease (any of the following types: HbSS, HbSC, HbSBeta Thal Plus, or HbSBeta Thal Zero)
• You are currently having a pain crisis related to sickle cell disease and need pain medicine given through an IV
• You have already received your first dose of pain medicine before being asked to join the study
• Your primary language is English or Spanish
• If you are an adult, you are willing and able to give your own consent to participate; if you are a child, a parent or legal guardian can give consent, and children aged 7–17 will also be asked for their own agreement to participate when they are able to understand

Who may not be able to join:

• You only have sickle cell trait (not the full disease)
• Your main language is not English or Spanish
• Your pain is caused by something other than a sickle cell pain crisis
• You do not need IV pain medication for your current pain
• You have not yet received any pain medicine before being approached for the study, for any reason (including difficulty placing an IV)
• The level of oxygen in your blood is below 90% while breathing regular room air
• You have had a bad reaction to the medicine ketamine in the past
• You have high blood pressure that is not well controlled (blood pressure at or above 140/90 at the time of enrollment)
• You have a significant or uncontrolled heart condition, liver disease, kidney disease, or thyroid disease
• There are signs of increased pressure in your brain
• You have increased pressure in your eyes
• You have active mania, bipolar disorder with manic episodes, or a history of hallucinations or paranoia related to a previously diagnosed mental health condition
• You are pregnant or may be pregnant (a pregnancy test will be done as part of your clinical care before enrollment, and a positive result will mean you cannot join)
• Your liver enzyme blood test results (if available before the study) show signs that your liver is not working properly
• You appear to be under the influence of alcohol or any other substance at the time of the study
• You are a ward of the state or a prisoner as defined by the Department of Human Services
• You or your guardian are not considered able to fully understand and agree to participation in the study
