Who might be able to join this trial:
- You have been newly diagnosed with medullary thyroid carcinoma, confirmed either by a lab test of tissue or cells, OR by a blood test showing a raised calcitonin level (above 10 pg/mL) where other infections or tumour-related causes have been ruled out
- Your doctors expect you to live for at least 12 weeks or more
- You are generally well enough to carry out light activity or normal daily tasks (your doctor can confirm this based on a standard fitness scale)
- Scans have shown the cancer has not spread to distant parts of the body, and the affected area can be removed with surgery
- You are planned to have surgery within the next 30 days
- If you are a woman who could become pregnant, you agree to use reliable contraception during the study and for 6 months afterwards; male participants must also agree to use contraception during this period
- You are able to understand what the trial involves, are willing to take part, and can sign a consent form
Who may not be able to join:
- You have already had any treatment for medullary thyroid carcinoma, such as surgery, radiotherapy, targeted therapy, or other procedures
- Your blood tests show that your bone marrow, liver, or kidneys are not working well enough (confirm specific blood test thresholds with the trial site)
- You are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or currently breastfeeding
- You have a history of any other type of cancer
- You are unable to lie flat and still for at least 30 minutes
- You have a known allergy to contrast dye used in scans
- You have claustrophobia or a mental health condition that may make it difficult to follow the study procedures
- You are unwilling to take part in the trial
- Your doctors do not consider you suitable for surgery, or you are not willing to have surgery
- Your doctor feels there is any other reason you would not be suitable for this study (confirm with trial site)
