- People on the transplant waiting list who are listed to receive more than one organ at the same time (for example, a kidney and another organ together)
- Kidneys from donors whose legal decision-maker did not agree to research involvement
- Deceased donor kidneys that were offered to VUMC as a backup option (meaning another centre had first priority)
- Deceased donor kidneys that were offered to VUMC only after the kidney had already been removed from the donor
- Deceased donor kidneys that have already been placed on ice before being considered for the trial
