Who might be able to join this trial:

For communities:

  • Any community is welcome to apply by submitting a letter of intent and a short description of their local needs.
  • Communities where preventing and treating childhood obesity is considered an important health concern are given priority.
  • Communities and local organisations located in rural, frontier, or small regional areas, or those that serve families from these areas, are given priority.
  • Communities and local organisations that serve families in areas with limited access to health programs and disease prevention services are given priority.
  • The community must be willing to be randomly assigned to one of two study conditions.
  • The community must be willing to form a local team (called a Community Implementation Team) to run the program.

For team members (Community Implementation Team):

  • People who are 18 years of age or older may be eligible to participate as team members.
  • People who work for or are connected to a community organisation that applied for and was selected through the program's application process may be eligible to participate as team members.

For families taking part in the program:

  • Families that include at least one child aged between 5 and 13 years old whose body weight falls at or above a certain level for their age and height (at or above the 85th percentile on a standard growth chart) may be eligible.
  • At least one parent or caregiver must agree to attend the program sessions together with the child.

Who may not be able to join:

  • Communities that do not submit a letter of intent and brief description of local need through the required application process would not be considered.
  • Team members who are under 18 years of age would not be eligible.
  • Team members who are not employed by or connected to a selected community organisation would not be eligible.
  • Families without at least one child aged 5 to 13 years who meets the weight criteria would not be eligible.
  • Families where no parent or caregiver is willing to attend sessions alongside the child would not be eligible.
