Who might be able to join this trial:

  • You are 50 years of age or older at the time your chest X-ray was taken
  • You have had a chest X-ray (taken from the front, called a PA view) and a bone density scan (called a DXA scan) performed within 6 months of each other
  • Both your chest X-ray and bone density scan were done on or after 1st January 2010
  • Your basic personal details (sex and age) are recorded in hospital records

  • Your chest X-ray was taken more than 6 months before or after your bone density scan
  • You had already been diagnosed with osteoporosis (a bone-thinning condition showing a T-score of -2.5 or below) before the bone density scan used in this study
  • You were taking medications to treat osteoporosis in the 12 months before your bone density scan, or continuously for 3 months before your chest X-ray

  • You were diagnosed with a bone metabolism disease (other than osteoporosis or low bone density) within 3 months after the bone density scan
  • You have a significant spinal or chest wall deformity, such as a severe curved spine (with a Cobb angle greater than 40°), severe forward-hunching of the spine, or a chest wall shape affecting more than 30% of the chest area
  • You have metal implants from previous chest or spinal surgery that would block key parts of the images needed for computer analysis
  • You have a lung or chest condition (such as fluid around the lungs or a large mass) that covers more than 30% of the bone structures visible on your chest X-ray
  • You have chosen not to allow your confidential data to be used for research
