Who might be able to join this trial:
- People who are currently enrolled in a chronic hemodialysis unit.
- People who have been receiving hemodialysis treatment for more than 3 months.
- People who are 40 years of age or older.
- People whose hemoglobin (a measure of red blood cells) level is greater than 10 mg/dl.
- People who are able to complete physical fitness tests or grip/muscle strength assessments.
- People who are willing and able to sign a consent form agreeing to take part.
Who may not be able to join:
- People who experience instability or complications during their dialysis sessions.
- People with certain medical conditions where exercise is not considered safe, including an active infection, cancer, uncontrolled irregular heart rhythms, or significantly reduced heart pumping function.
- People with bone, muscle, or breathing problems that get worse with exercise.
- People who have had a lower limb amputation and do not use a prosthetic limb.
- People who have had a stroke with lasting effects, or a mini-stroke (a brief episode of stroke-like symptoms) within the past 6 weeks.
- People with very high blood pressure that is not controlled (top number above 200 or bottom number above 120).
- People with unstable chest pain (at rest or during activity), or who have had heart bypass surgery or a heart attack within the past 6 weeks.
- People with diabetes where blood sugar levels are severely out of control (above 300 mg/dl).
- People who regularly experience low blood pressure during dialysis (below 90/70 mmHg on average).
- People with psychiatric conditions or cognitive difficulties that would prevent participation in a muscle training program.
- People who have an arteriovenous fistula (a surgically created connection used for dialysis) located in a lower limb.
- People with a neurological injury affecting movement that would prevent safe participation in the strength exercises.
- People who have been hospitalised within the 3 months before the study begins.
- People who are unlikely to attend sessions regularly, or who are unable to understand the treatment involved (missing more than 25% of sessions would be considered insufficient cooperation).
