Who might be able to join this trial:

  • People who have been assessed as low-to-moderate risk for surgery, based on a standard pre-surgery health scoring system (scores 1 to 3 out of 5 on the ASA scale)
  • People who need a full removal of a non-functioning kidney, or removal of half a kidney, due to a long-term benign (non-cancerous) inflammatory condition
  • People who have a kidney mass of 7 cm or smaller that may be treatable by removing only part of the kidney, rather than the whole kidney
  • People who have a localised kidney tumour requiring full removal of the kidney, or removal of the kidney and ureter together, where the tumour has not spread into major blood vessels
  • People who have been assessed as medically fit to undergo general anaesthesia and surgery
  • People who are willing and able to provide written informed consent to participate

Who may not be able to join:

  • People who need emergency surgery, are dependent on dialysis, or are planned for a combined surgical approach
  • People whose medical records are incomplete
  • People whose cancer has already spread to other parts of the body at the time of diagnosis
  • People who have had extensive prior surgery on the same side of the abdomen, or who have severe internal scarring that would make keyhole (laparoscopic) surgery unsafe
  • People who need another major surgical procedure performed at the same time as the kidney surgery (for example, removal of part of the large bowel)
  • People whose tumour has grown significantly into major blood vessels and would require complex vascular reconstruction
  • People with uncorrected blood clotting problems
  • People who are pregnant, or people with a body mass index (BMI) above 40
  • People who are unable to give informed consent or are unlikely to be able to attend follow-up appointments
